The BLACK Profile and the Cybercrime Law

So what's the new trend in Facebook for the Filipino netizens?? Recently, some FB and Twitter users (and ME) are changing they're profile and cover photos to black and are using the black horizontal bar followed with the text that read: "[COMMENT BLOCKED] (RA NO. 10175)" in protest against the controversial Cybercrime Law that was passed on October 2nd.

Various opinions (some exaggerated and some reasonable) has been spread out all over the web regarding topics like freedom of speech, power of the Internet, code of conduct, clarification and true understanding of the said law, credibility of government officials who supported it, etc.

What's in the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012? For more details click here.

The most controversial part of this law is the libel section that was added by Sen. Vicente "Tito" Sotto III.

"Mr. Sotto claims to be a bullying victim because bloggers accused him of plagiarizing an August Senate speech. In the Senator's defense, his aide argued, "Even our image was copied from God. We are all plagiarists." ~ Excerpt from The Wall Street Journal (Manila's Political Cyber Bullies, October 4, 2012, 12:13 p.m. ET.)

It reminds me of one of the rules back in college when submitting a proposal/thesis, plagiarism is a big NO.

Anyway back to our topic, I've compiled some web article and YouTube videos about the said law..... So what do you think?

"The law is not clear on who's liable..." ~ Sen. Teofisto Guingona
So if the recipient didn't like one's opinion or joke, you're already considered as a criminal? What happened to freedom of speech?

Let's say the government wants the people to be more responsible for their posts/comments/opinions/jokes/etc. in the World Wide Web.... still they also need to be clear on their intention and clarify that vague Section 19. There are so much things to talk about with this particular section and so much more about the law itself. And I admit as of now I'm not updated on what's the real deal on this but hopefully everything will turn out well for the good of the many..

With all that's said and done, all I want to say is.... "Nobody owns the Internet!" ;p

Connect it! ;p

NO TO E-MARTIAL LAW!
