Orange Days: (My) Drama Review

College setting jdorama reminds me of my college days -- restless nights, overdue projects, cramming, midterms and finals, scorecards, midnight concerts, road trips, drinking session-SOJU!, unplanned hangouts, card games, cafeteria food, good friends and first love.

Synopsis
Kai Yuuki (Satoshi Tsumabuki) is in his senior year at university studying social welfare psychology. At present, he is in the middle of job-hunting season. He is finding it difficult with no job offers so far. One day, he meets a girl who is playing violin in the campus. She is Sae Hagio (Kou Shibasaki). In marked contrast to her beautiful tone and attractive looks, her personality is somewhat impertinent. And to top it off, she communicates through very vulgar sign language. Four years ago, she lost the most important thing for a violinist - her hearing. As a result Sae closed off her inner self from the outside world. Kai finds himself on a date with Sae, in place of his best friend. Unexpectedly, he comes into contact with Sae's private side. Love, job-hunting, friendship... Setting a campus in spring as a dorama's backdrop, it's the start of a glittering youth drama. --TBS

The first few scenes of the first episode portrays the typical scenarios of what a college student worries/concerns as he/she prepares him/herself to the "real world". I found the first few episodes a bit boring but at the same time I was hooked as the story unfolds and the characters face their own dilemmas - the courage to move on, taking over someone else's responsibility, searching on what lies ahead, etc.

The "orange" represents the bittersweet youth, well that is according to one of the characters or a special memento for Kai and Sae. For me, it symbolizes the color of the beautiful sunset skyline transitioning to darkness and darkness to sunrise which reminds of my three favorite sunset scenes:

> Kai, Sae, Shohei, Akane, and Keita declare their goal and promises to achieve it as the sun sets
> Graduation Scene (last episode)
> Kai's and Sae's kissing scene at the beach ^_^

I like how the actors are modestly dressed that it makes it easier for the viewers to focus on the plot and not on the actor's line of clothing. Even with the simple clothing, it emphasizes each of the actor's unique personalities. I don't know about others but for me, its a bit annoying to watch actors wear something that is not appropriate to the scene or distracting that makes the viewers lose their focus on the drama's storyline.

The story focuses a lot on Sae taking up music again despite her disability (deaf and mute). She is stubborn, strong-willed, has a bad temper, and has a very vulgar personality. One thing that she hates the most is to be specially treated as a disabled.

Sae was called on the stage to talk about her disability. She started of by writing on the board....

... and then end it with a finger. Lol!
Studying psychology, Kai is a perfect match for Sae. Ever since their first meeting, Kai has been there for Sae to snap her back to her senses whenever she is feeling down and upset. Eventually, the two fall in love with each other.

One of my favorite scenes is when Sae sent Kai a letter with just a big circle on the paper (Yes Weird isn't it... :p). Up until now, I still don''t know what that big circle supposed to mean. hmmm An orange? wedding ring??? hmmm..

"Action speaks louder than words" that's what this drama is for me.. ^_^

OST

The soundtrack makes me feel nostalgic of my college days.. sigh.. daydreaming again..
